My Intentions With the Soloist

Something I said on another message board (another crazy Ziolko rant, if you will) that I felt was important enough to reiterate here. I hope maybe it explains not only why The Soloist is so important to me but why I am taking so much time and effort in working on it:

"..One of the things I'm really striving for with this book is to really see how many different storytelling techniques I can use with the story. One of the things that bugs the living hell out of me is that not enough comic book creators don't exploit the medium to it's fullest potential. Comic books are unique from almost any other method of entertainment, save maybe animation, that has an audience coming into it with an already established suspension of disbelief. They already accept the fact that people fly, move mountains, and wear ridiculous outfits without public ridicule. This allows us as storytellers to completely manipulate what the reader sees in order to convey whatever emotion or message we want from a moment on the page. I really don't think enough creators realize that and use that to their fullest advantage. I want the Soloist to be something that really takes the medium of comic book storytelling and use it to it's fullest potential. I want it to be something people read and say "Wow, I didn't think a comic book could do that."

"At least, that's my goal. Whether or not I actually reach it is one thing. And maybe that's why it's taking me twice as long to work on it as compared to Test-Tube or Ninjas, which is why I need all these side projects such as Abe Awesome to make me feel productive."
